Florida Keys Tarpon on Fly Report
June 3 & 4, 2011
Greetings from Tarpon World:
June 3, 2011: Marty Butler and his friend Scott arrived in the Keys today for 2 nights of fly fishing for Tarpon, we left the dock at 2:00 AM and headed to Tarpon World. The wind has been blowing from the east north east, at between 20 and 30 knots fro the last week which has lowered the water temperature to 82 degrees and the amount of Tarpon on the flats have decreased dramatically. The seas were choppy to rough, and the Tarpon were scarce tonight, Marty got a soft bite but never jumped a fish, while Scott wound up jumping two Tarpon and he fought a 70 pounder to the boat for his first Tarpon on fly released.
June 4, 2011: Very slow fishing tonight, still windy with 81.9 degree water temp and rough seas. Marty jumped the only Tarpon of the night, a nice female of over 100 pounds, this big fish ate the fly, jumped once, ran off several hundred yards of backing, jumped again, and then spit the hook. We had fun but fishing was slow, Marty already decided to return next year for some Extreme Tarpon on Fly. The wind died down today and more fish have been seen on the flats, hopefully fishing will improve for the rest of the season, I love my job, wish you were here.
Regards:
Jake

Extreme Tarpon on Fly Report
May, 31, June 1, and 2, 2011
Greetings from Tarpon World:
May 31, 2011: Chuck Furimsky, (Owner of "The Fly Fishing Shows") from Ocean City NJ and Somerset PA, arrived today to join me for three nights of Fly Fishing for Tarpon. We arrived at the marina where we boarded "Fly Reel" at 12:15 AM and then headed out to Silver King slew. The wind was blowing from the east at 20 knots with gusts to 25, the water was very choppy, and the water temperature was 83 degrees. There was sever hours of thunder showers which passed us before we got to the boat, but it seemed like the low pressure turned off the Tarpon.
Chuck is a great fly tier and had tied up 18 "POON BUGS" to use during his charters, unfortunately, he tied these very effective flies using Mustad, and other brands of hooks, but did not spend the extra money for the Owner Ahi hooks. The first fish that Chuck Hooked, jumped 3 times and then broke the point off of the fly hook. The next fish bent the hook over and spit the fly after 2 jumps, and Chucks Third fish of the night was a monster , (over 130 pounds) which broke the 20 pound tippet after a 400 yard run and 2 jumps. Fishing was slow tonight and we went in after a short rain shower, Chuck had jumped 3 Tarpon on Fly on his first charter.
June 1, 2011: Tonight, Chuck and I hit the water at 1:00 AM and headed to Tarpon world, the wind was blowing at 25 knots from the north east and the seas were rough. There was no sign of Tarpon or bait however, over on "silver king bank" we hooked our first Tarpon at 2:00 AM, a female of 110 pounds. The first three Tarpon which Chuck hooked tonight bent the points of the hooks over and then came unbuttoned, the fourth fish, a really big female ran off several hundred yards and then jumped and fell back on the leader and broke off. The 5th and last Tarpon of the night was an 80 pounder which chuck fought for 10 minutes and then pulled the hook, total for tonight, 5 jumped.
June 2, 2011: Tonight we started fishing at 1:30 AM and got our first Tarpon at 1:35 AM, the bite is on and we jumped at least one Tarpon on every drift down through Tarpon World. Chuck jumped 11 Tarpon tonight, he caught one fish which was about 100 pounds, and lost several more close to the boat. I am happy to report that the Tarpon are back, chuck jumped a total of 19 Tarpon on fly during his 12 hours of fly fishing during this slow time. We had lots of fun and he has already reserved dates for next year. I really love my job, stay tuned for more reports from Tarpon world, Wish you were here.

Florida Keys Tarpon on Fly Report
May 28, 2011
Greetings from Tarpon World:
May 28, 2011: Tonight an old client of mine, Frank Aiello from Chicago is on vacation in Islamorada for the Memorial Day weekend. He called and booked tonight for a night time extreme fly fishing for Tarpon charter to take his son , Frank Junior to catch his first Tarpon on fly. After 10 minutes of casting, and fish fighting instruction for
After releasing that first Tarpon, Frank Aiello junior was red hot, he jumped and fought a total of five Tarpon on fly, and caught four of them, 70 pounds, 80 pounds, 110 pounds, and 115 pounds. Mean while Frank senior was taking pictures and he jumped 2 really nice Tarpon. I think that the proud father and his son "Tarpon Frank junior" will be hooked on fly fishing for Tarpon for a long time. I love my job, wish you were here, stay tuned for more reports from Tarpon world.

Keys Tarpon on Fly Report
May 26 & 27, 2011
Greetings from Tarpon World
May, 26, 2011: Yesterday, Cheryl O'Neill from northern California, flew into Key West, rented a car, and drove up to Marathon to get ready for a couple of nights of Extreme fly fishing for Tarpon. I picked up Cheryl at her hotel and drove to the Marina where we boarded "Fly Reel" at 8:30 PM and headed out to Tarpon World. It took about an hour before Cheryl jumped her first Tarpon on fly, and then she jumped one on each drift over the flat. It was hard for Cheryl to land a fish however after jumping 6 tarpon and fighting several close to the boat, and then just at quitting time, she hooked and jumped the biggest Tarpon of the season in my boat, this was a big female of well over 150 pounds (Maybe 180 pounds). That Tarpon jumped 10 foot in the air about 4 foot from the boat, it was magnificent, and spit the hook in the middle of the jump, Cheryl had jumped and fought 7 Tarpon during this 4 hour charter.
May 27, 2011; Cheryl and I began fly fishing for Tarpon at 9:30 tonight, the bite started slow. About 10:30 Cheryl hooked, jumped, fought, and released her first Tarpon ever, a nice Male of 80 pounds. at the end of the four hour charter Cheryl had jumped 5 nice Tarpon and landed two on fly. We had lots of fun and she will be back next year. Stay tuned for more reports, I love my job, wish you were here.

Tarpon on Fly Report
May 24 & 25, 2011
Greetings from Tarpon World:
April 24, 2011: My friend Jon Ziarnik and his friend Boyd Gibbons have chartered me for two nights of extreme night time fly fishing for Tarpon. Tonight we left the dock in 15 knot east wind and headed to Tarpon bank, our first cast was at 7:00 PM, which produced our first jumped tarpon. Jon and Boyd, during the next 3 1/2 hour jumped a total of 9 Tarpon, both anglers caught tarpon over 80 pounds, and Jon released a fish which was well over 110 pounds. Total, 9 Jumped, 3 caught and released.
April 25, 2011: Tonight the wind was southeast at 18 knots and it was hard to keep the fly in the mouth of my Tarpon. Jon jumped 7 and released a fish which was really a nice Tarpon. Boyd had a great trip but only got 2 bites. It was fun spending time on the water with Tarpon jumping 15 foot in the air and reminiscing of out last 20+ years of fly fishing together. I really love this job, wish you were here, stay tuned for more reports.

Tarpon on Fly Report
May 23, 2011
Greetings from the Fabulous Florida Keys:
May 24, 2011: My friends, Dusty Byrd, Billy Coulliette, (owners of Alaska Troutfitters in Coopers Landing Alaska), and Cameron Muse (Curt Trout junior, US Coast Guard), booked me tonight for four hours of fly fishing for Tarpon. The bite was good, each angler Jumped two and caught one Tarpon on Fly.
Cameron's fish was a fat 6 1/2 foot 120 pound female, which he fought for 40 minutes, during that time this fat Silver King towed my boat about a mile. Next Billy caught a male Tarpon which was between 60 and 80 pounds, lots of great jumps. Now it was Dusty's turn to land another male of 70 pounds, she did a great job and we took a few good pictures of her fish. Billy fought another big Silver King of 100 pounds which gave us some awesome jumps before pulling the hook next to the boat. It was great fishing with my old friends from Alaska, I hope to get up there to visit Alaska one day soon. Stay tuned for more fishing reports, I love my job, wish you were here. Please remember Ann Jordan (my 101 year old mother) who is not feeling well. I hope that you are enjoying my fishing reports, i love doing the research to gather data for the reports (Fly Fishing)!

Florida Keys Tarpon on Fly Report
May 19, 20, 21, 2011
Greetings from Tarpon World:
May 19, 2011: Tonight I was scheduled to pick up Larry Lack and his wife at 2:15 AM for a fly fishing adventure in Tarpon world where we would fish from 2:45 Am until 6;45 AM. I sat in the hotel parking lot from 2:00 to 3:00 AM waiting for my clients who never showed up. At 3:30 I woke up my friends Billy Coulliette and Dusty Byrd (owners of Alaska Troutfitters in Coopers Landing Alaska) who are visiting the keys and staying at my home. We got on the water at 4;00 AM and then I got a call from Larry who just woke up (His alarm failed) and rescheduled for a short trip for Tomorrow.
Billy, Dusty, and I fished until dawn, Both anglers caught a Tarpon of 90 plus pounds while jumping a total of 7 big Tarpon on fly. By the way the worms hatched today, I didn't go to the first night of the worm Hatch.
May, 20, 2011: Billy, Dusty, and I, went to the worm hatch at 6:00 and fished until 8:30 PM, we saw hundreds of fish and thousands of worms, and got no bites at all. One of my friends jumped 4, and a few other guides jumped a few fish, there was at least 8 boats there and I don't think that there was 80 fish jumped on Fly. Cool to see but not much fun fro me, as I like to hook and fight Tarpon!
At 3:45 AM, Larry Lack and his wife met me at the Marina, we fished from 4:00 AM until 6:30 AM, She hooked and Jumped a total of 3 big Tarpon. After a 15 minute battle with a 100 pound Tarpon Mrs Lack handed the rod to her California trout guide husband, he fought that fish for another 30 minutes out into the ocean until just after the leader came through the rod tip, the tippet broke and the couple got a release on their first Tarpon on Fly.
May 21, 2011: today I brought my boat to Marathon for a couple of days, I cleaned her, and filled her with fuel. At 7:00 PM I headed out to a flat on the ocean side of the 7 mile bridge, where I anchored to wait for worms. A few worms, came off, at the Pigeon Key Flat, I stayed for 1 hour and 20 minutes, and jumped 9 Tarpon on fly. My worm flies are tied on #4 hooks so I tighten the drag and the hook opens after the first couple of jumps. Fun but not as good as my night time Tarpon fishing at Tarpon World. I really love my job, wish you were here, stand by for more fly fishing reports.
Regard:
Jake

Keys Tarpon on Fly Report
May 15 & 16, 2011
Greetings from Tarpon World:
May 15, 2011: Mike Stanco from Southern California was in Florida for his wedding, he booked one night of fly fishing for Tarpon and brought his brother with him. We arrived at Tarpon world to strong west wind after earlier thunder showers, the fishing was slow. Mike and his brother fished for four hours, they got 5 bites, jumped 3, and caught a 80 pound male Tarpon on fly. We had lots of fun, Mike is already looking into booking another charter.
May 16, 2011: My old friend / client, Gerry Wendrovsky from NY and Connecticut came to Florida with his wife Karen on a family matter, and he decided to come to the Keys and fish a night with me. Gerry and I fished for about three and a half hours, on a beautiful full moon night, with a minor shrimp hatch. Gerry (a really good fly angler) jumped 7 Tarpon tonight, and managed to fight three to the leader fro release. For some reason all three of the Tarpon which Gerry caught, all were males under 90 pounds. They all jumped a lot and put on an awesome aerial display in the bright moonlight. I really enjoyed spend this time aboard Fly Reel with my friend, sharing this world class fly fishing. I love my Job, stay tuned for more reports, wish you were here!

Fly Fishing for Tarpon Report
May 14, 1011
Greetings from Tarpon HQ:
May 14, 2011: Emerson Cannon from Pennsylvania, Smoot Carter from Virginia and Harkers Island NC, joined me aboard my Jones Brothers, Cape Fisherman "Fly Reel" for their fifth and final night of Fly Fishing for Tarpon tonight. We boarded "Fly Reel" at 11:00 PM with a full supply of "POON Bugs" and headed to Silver King bank over in Tarpon world. When I shut off the engine on the north end of Silver King bank, the Tarpon were already eating shrimp on the surface.
The moon is almost full (3 more days), the water temperature came down to 86 degrees, the sky is clear, with south wind at 10 to 15 knots. less than a minute after we arrived, Emerson jumped a big fish which jumped 6 times and then spit the hook. Next Smoot got some world class jumps (15 foot in the air) from a 90 pound male, the moon is so bright that we didn't have to use the spotlight at all, you can see the fish eating and sight cast and then watch the awesome jumps. As the night went on, the shrimp got thick and thousands of Tarpon were eating all around the boat, Emerson and Smoot were, during several hours, hooking a Tarpon on every cast. At 2:00 Am after 3 hard hours of carnage, my team of fly anglers had Jumped and fought a total of 18 and they caught and released four big Tarpon, all on 20 pound tippet on fly.
Tonight produced some of the best night fly fishing for Tarpon that I have seen so far this year. During the 20 hours total that we spent fly fishing for Tarpon during the last 5 nights, Smoot and Emerson Jumped a total of 53 Tarpon and they caught 18 Tarpon and a Bluefish. This may be the best place in the world to catch big Tarpon on fly, and I really love sharing this fishery with friends and clients. I do love my job, wish you were here! I still have the following GOOD prime time Tarpon fly fishing night tides available, if you are up to catching some really awesome fish, contact me right away to lock up your special dates. May 18, 28, 29, 30, June, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17. (The Worms are Coming)! Stay tuned for more reports.

Fly Fishing for Tarpon Report
May 12 and 13, 1011
Greetings from mid Tarpon Season in The Keys:
May 12, 2011: Emerson Cannon, Smoot Carter, and I began the charter at 9:15 PM on Tarpon bank neat POON slew, with 87.9 degree water temperature and east wind at 12 knots. We had our first rain today for an hour with squall winds to 43 knots, sideways rain, thunder and lightning, then it calmed down and turned into a beautiful night. The weather change turned off the Tarpon, which were in the area but not feeding aggressively, we wound up after 5 hours of fly fishing jumping 5 Tarpon and releasing 3 on fly. A good night of Tarpon fly fishing considering the few bites that Emerson and Smoot got. Two more nights for these two anglers, the weather looks really good for the rest of the week.
May 13, 2011: Tarpon world came alive tonight, thousands of Tarpon were eating tens of thousands of shrimp on the surface, under clear moon lit skies, with 10 knot southeast wind. The water temperature dropped to 86 degrees, and combined with the rain last night, the shrimp hatch was on big time. We began casting to feeding tarpon in the moonlight at 10:00 PM, and Emerson hooked and caught the first Tarpon of the night by 10 :15. From then on Smoot and Emerson rotated jumping and releasing Tarpon until they stopped feeding at 2:00 AM.
Smoot caught 2 big Tarpon , over 120 pounds, and Emerson also caught two really big fish. When we quit (out of flies) at 2:00 AM the final score was 15 Tarpon Jumped on fly with 7 caught and released, four of those Tarpon were over 120 pounds. We laughed, joked, and giggled like little kids as this was just a spectacular 4 hours of fly fishing for Tarpon. I really love my job, wish you were here, I still have some available prime nights for Tarpon fly fishing Give me a call or check here for availabilities: http://jakejordan.com/floridakeys.html . Tarpon on Fly fishing Report
May 10 & 11, 2011
Greetings from the fabulous Florida Keys:
May 10, 2011: My friends Smoot Carter, from Winchester VA and Harkers Island NC, and Emerson Cannon, from West Chester Pennsylvania arrived today for 5 nights of extreme night time Tarpon fly fishing. We boarded "Fly Reel", my Jones Brothers Cape Fisherman charter boat, at the marina at 7:00 PM and headed out to the Tarpon Flats. I saw my friend Captain Neil Light jump, fight, and release a 90 pound Tarpon while we were motoring out to Tarpon world. The wind was blowing from the east at 10 knots but the water temperature had risen to 88.1 degrees (Too High for this time of year), and the water was full of sea weed.
Fishing was slow tonight, however we managed to hook, jump, and fight 3 tarpon during the four hour charter. Several of these Tarpon were well over 120 pounds but we never got one to the boat. This was the first charter of my Tarpon season that we didn't catch a Tarpon, however as a side note, after dark Emerson got a bite, set the hook, and a small fish jumped on the end of his 12 weight line, after a short battle Emerson released a 16 inch "Bluefish" the first that I have ever caught on a Tarpon flat. We had lots of Fun and are looking forward to better fishing tomorrow.
May, 11, 2011: Tonight Emerson, Smoot, and I headed to Tarpon world at 8:00 PM, with dead calm wind and flat seas. Tarpon were showing all around the boat, and after sunset Smoot jumped his first Tarpon of the night, then both anglers jumped several Tarpon and Both Emerson and Smoot caught their first Tarpon of the night. The moon is bright 3/4 full and the tarpon were feeding on the surface on shrimp, we were sight casting to feeding Tarpon at 11:00 PM. We finally released the fourth Tarpon caught tonight, from the 11 Tarpon of which Smoot and Emerson jumped. This was an awesome night of fly fishing for big Tarpon, we all were giggling like little kids, great fishing with good friends! Stay tuned for more fishing reports from Tarpon world, in case I forgot to let you know, I LOVE MY JOB! Wish you were here.

Extreme Tarpon on Fly Report
May 8 & 9, 2011
Greetings from Tarpon World:
May 8, 2011: My good friend Tony Weaver from Anchorage Alaska booked two nights of my extreme night time fly fishing for Tarpon. This year Tony brought along his good friend and fishing buddy Tim Howland from Seattle Washington, Tim had never seen a Tarpon prior to this trip. Tonight the conditions were: 85 degree water temperature, no wind, dead calm seas, lots of sea weed, and plenty of rolling Tarpon. We began fishing at 7:00 PM and watched hundreds of Tarpon slowly rolling all around the boat, we only got one bite before sunset, then Tony hooked, jumped, and pulled the hook on a big female. Later after jumping a couple of fish and breaking the tip off of a Sage 12 weight in the heavy sea weed, I saw the fin of a laid up surface Tarpon. "Cast over there, (Tony), about 60 feet, and slowly strip the fly", and then a 110# female charged and ate the fly. Tony fought that monster for 2 miles, rolled her on her side on the surface, removed the fly from her mouth, and then after pictures we released this awesome Tarpon. Jumped 3 and caught one tonight!
May 9, 2011: Tim Howland and Tony Weaver met me at "Fly Reel" in the marina at 7:15 PM, for another night of POON fly fishing. Dead calm, lots of sea weed, and thousands of Tarpon rolling on the surface in Tarpon world. Just as the sun set, Tim jumped his first 100 pound+ Tarpon on fly, after the initial jump, Tim forgot to set the hook and the fish spit the fly back at him, (he was shaking)! Next, just after the moon came up, Tim hooked a big male (about 90 pounds), which took 300 yards of backing, jumped 6 times, and settled in for the 20 minute battle, until Tim finally caught and released his first ever Tarpon, of course it was on fly on 20 pound tippet.
Tony jumped two more Poons tonight, and then his final fish of the night, another big Female, ate the fly and was hooked good. Now Tony, who is a world class fly angler, used some new techniques learned tonight from his favorite, old, Tarpon guide, and beat the crap out of this 125 pound Silver King, in less than 10 minutes. We were giggling like little kids as Tony released this awesome Tarpon, it was fun fishing with my good friend again. Tim and Tony fished fro 8 hours of hard fly fishing, they jumped 7 Tarpon, and released 3, the numbers do not tell the story, we had lots of fun! Stay tuned for more fly fishing reports from Tarpon world, I love this job, wish you were here.

Keys Tarpon Fly Fishing Report
May, 5, & 6, 2011
Greetings from Tarpon World:
May 5, 2011, Tonight my friend Ric Cox from Atlantic Beach, NC and his friend LC from Dallas Texas met me at the marina at: 2: 15 AM, we arrived at Tarpon world and began casting flies to Tarpon at 2:30. The wind had shifted to the south at 10 mph and the water temperature was 83.2 degrees. Fishing was slow for the first 2 hours, with each angler only jumping one Tarpon. Then at 4:30 they started to eat, LC jumped a couple of big fish but had a hard time staying connected to them. Then Ric hooked a big (over 120 pound) female which towed my boat about a mile and a half out to sea, Ric was fighting this big fish using his new TFO Blue Water HD fly rod which he bought at world wide sportsman to replace his 12 weight Orvis rod which broke on a fish the night before. Finally after a 40 minute battle we got the leader and Ric had released a really big female Tarpon. When we quit at sun up the score for my anglers was 6 jumped Tarpon with one big fish caught and released.
May 6, 2011: We met up at "Fly Reel" in the Marina at 2:45 and began fishing at 3:00, the seas were calm and the wind was calm. In Tarpon world fly fishing for Tarpon works best when the wind is blowing above 5 knots and below 30 knots, dead calm and 40 knots is considered bad. We were able to jump a total of 4 Tarpon on fly, Ric caught a big Female on his only bite. Then later, on the last bite of the night, LC hooked another fat monster (120 + ) Silver King, which put on a wonderful exhibition of how to fight against a good angler. LC was fighting this fish on his new 12 weight TFO TICR-X fly rod which he got to replace another 12 weight Orvis fly rod which broke on a big fish earlier in the trip. After a 35 minute battle in which LC did a great job, he rolled that fish over and we released her. The Score for Tonight was 4 fish jumped and two caught and released. After 4 nights of fly fishing for Tarpon LC and Ric jumped a total of 25 Silver king and then caught 10 of these awesome fish. We had a great time fishing together and I look forward to fishing with these anglers in the future. Stay tuned for more fishing reports t follow soon, I love my job, wish you were here.

Florida Keys Tarpon on Fly Report
April, 29, 30, May, 1, 2011
My friend Don Butler usually brings his son John Butler to the Keys each year for John's birthday present, which is catching Tarpon on fly with me. This year they planned to fish on April 29, 30 , and May 1, which turned out to have not perfect weather. The first night , April 29, a low pressure moved over the Keys, the wind went from east to south, to North, to calm, and then back to the east.
Tarpon like consistent weather and they love the easterly trade winds from 10 to 15 knots, on April 29 they did not bite very good. We fished from 10:30 PM to 2:30 AM, we only jumped a total of 3 fish from 6 bites, Don caught and released the only Tarpon caught tonight.
April 30, 2011: Tonight the wind blew steady from the east at 20 knots, the Tarpon were feeding but the hook up's were hard. John (Birthday ) Butler jumped 5 Tarpon and released 2 tonight. Don hooked, and jumped 4 Tarpon on fly tonight, and he caught two fish with one over 110 pounds.
By the way, earlier this month a friend tied some POON Bug pattern flies from a sample which I provided, they were very good flies, almost perfect copies. Unfortunately instead of tying the flies on Owner Ahi hooks 4/0, they were tied on Daiichi hooks in 4/0, so far 3 of these fly's had the hook straighten out, and on two more the hook broke, all 5 caused the angler to loose the Tarpon, This has never happened too me with an owner hook?
May, 1, 2011: Don and John Butler joined me for this last night's charter at midnight, and we fished until 3:15 AM as both father and son wanted to leave the Keys early in the morning. The wind was blowing from the east at 25 knots, the seas were very choppy, but we managed to jump 7 tarpon, unfortunately we lost several to the bridge piling, and several others pulled the hook, Don Butler caught and released a Tarpon of close to 100 pounds. The wind is still blowing at 25 knots and will drop down to 15 tonight, looks like fishing will improve soon! Stay tuned for more fly fishing reports from Tarpon world, I love my job, wish you were here.

Keys Tarpon on Fly Report
April 28, 2011
Greetings from the land of the Tarpon:
April 28, 2011; was to be the last of three days for me to spend with my friends, Captain Brian Horsley and Captain Sarah Gardner, sharing the best Tarpon fly fishing in the world. Tonight we left Marathon, and drove to Cudjo Key to have a great dinner at "The Square Grouper" restaurant, and then drove back to Marathon to go fly fishing for tarpon at 10:00 PM.
Tonight the fishing was very good, with both Sarah and Brian catching Tarpon over 110 pounds. During one period of time Brian hooked, jumped, fought, and released four Tarpon on four casts. Two of those fish were close to 120 pounds, Brian rolled them over on their side and made them surrender. Meanwhile one of Sarah's many Tarpon was caught, and ready to be released, as I reached for that 70 pound fish, it then jumped and smashed into the side of the boat, the fish tried to come aboard but came up against that Carolina flair on my Jones Brothers boat. Oh did I tell you that this Tarpon pinned Sarah's 12 weight fly rod against the hull and shattered it?
At 2:15 AM after Sarah released her last fish of the night, we came home with the final count for tonight, 13 Tarpon jumped and nine caught and released on the Fly!
During the three nights of charters, Sarah and Brian jumped 34 tarpon, they caught, photographed, and released 18 during our 12 hours of fly fishing for Tarpon. More than half of those Tarpon weighted over 100 pounds, we did have some fun! I look forward to the next time when these fine anglers and good friends share some world class fly fishing with me. I will have some new good Tarpon pictures when Brian gets home. I love my job, I do have a few prime tarpon dates still available in June of this season, wish you were here.

Florida Keys Tarpon on Fly Report
April 27, 2011
Greetings from The Fabulous Florida Keys:
April 27, 2011: Sarah Gardner, Brian Horsley and I headed to "Tarpon World" aboard "Fly Reel" after a freshly caught Grouper Sandwich with sweet potato fries. Both Brian and Sarah made their first cast at 9:16 PM, and then at 9:21 Sarah hooked a 80 # male which ripped off 100 yards of backing and made an awesome jump, he spit the hook on that jump. Brian hooked a big fish next which ripped off a lot of backing, jumped a couple of times and then wrapped the backing around a crab pot buoy full of barnacles, we lost our first fly line of the night.
Fishing slowed down and we only has caught 1 Tarpon from 4 bites after 2 hours of fly fishing. there was not much bait (food) in the water so I moved from "Tarpon Bank" to "Jurassic Park " when we had two hours left to fish, GOOD MOVE! We found lots of bait and better current, for the rest of the night we spent more time fighting Tarpon than looking for them. At 1:15 AM Sarah released a 120 pound female, in all Sarah jumped 7 and caught 2 while Brian Jumped 6 Big (over 100 #) Tarpon and caught 3. We were tired but had big grins on our face. Score fro Day 1 = caught 4, Jumped 8, Day two = Caught 5, Jumped 13, Total for 2 nights Jumped 21, caught and released 9. Did I say we are having fun? Stay tuned for today / tonight results. I love my job, wish you were here.

Keys Tarpon on Fly Report
April 26, 2011
Greetings from Tarpon World:
My friends Captain Sarah Gardner and Captain Brian Horsley arrived for 3 days/ nights of catching Tarpon on fly. We had a nice Cuban dinner on April 26 and then went Tarpon fishing at 8:00 PM. Brian, Sarah, and I arrived on "Tarpon Bank" just off of "Tarpon Slew") at 8:15 Sarah made the first cast and then Brian was next, to cast out my POON BUG!
At 8:30 Sarah hooked the first fish of the night , Sarah leadered that 100 pounder after about 15 minutes, and then Brian was next with a 110 pound Tarpon wound up next to the boat for some pictures. Did I tell you that these are big, strong, fish being caught on 20 pound tippet.
At midnight after both anglers had released 2 tarpon each from 4 jumped, $ caught from 8 Jumped for the night. Next Brian hooked the Grand Mother, she was maybe a 180 to 200 pound female, which made one jump, after peeling off 200 yards of backing , against 6 pounds of drag, and then kicked it into overdrive. I was on a plane trying to keep this big, fast, Tarpon from dumping all of the 500 yards of backing. She raced 3/4 mile toward the bridge, when we got to within 200 yards of this fish she swam between 2 bridge pilings, under an abutment and raced away. Brian stopped the reel and broke the class tippet on this big fish which was halfway to Cuba, and then he wound 400+ yards of frayed backing back onto the reel and we got back the fly line. Of course the backing was shot from rubbing on the barnacles. Today the wind is blowing at 20, Brian and Sarah are at the park taking pictures of our local birds, I am rigged and ready for more Tarpon Madness tonight, stay tuned for more reports, I love my Job, wish you were here! I have dates still open in June, Lets catch Tarpon!

Keys Tarpon on Fly Report
April 18 & 19, 2011
Greetings from Tarpon World:
April 18, 2011: Jim and Tom Eldrige, are brothers from Iowa who have dreamed of catching a Tarpon on fly for many years. As boys they had seen a TV show in which Jim and Kelly Watt (Fly Fishing Video Magazine) caught some big Tarpon, while fly fishing on my boat. They arrived here late in the afternoon, took a nap, and we headed to Tarpon World at 1:30 AM. At 1:36 AM Jim hooked and fought his first Tarpon on fly, at 1:52, about 2 miles out in the ocean we released that 120# female.
Next Tom hooked a male fish about 80 pounds, that fish jumped 9 times and came to the boat for a release after a 12 minute fight. At 5:45 AM we headed to the dock after jumping 11 Tarpon with each angler releasing Three. These guys were so excited that they asked me to catch one to demonstrate how to beat one quickly, so I did. I hooked a big 130# female about 2 miles from the bridge, I never let her get into the backing, she pulled that boat about a mile into the wind, and I released her after a 9 minute battle, I love my job!
April 19, 2011: Tom, Jim, and I headed out at 2:00 AM, Tom caught the first Tarpon of this charter, and then Jim jumped 3 in a row all came unhooked. He caught his next bite, a big Female, and then each angler jumped 2 more fish before Tom caught the last fish of the night.
After these guys counted their fish they had jumped 21 Tarpon and released 9 on fly, plus the one that I caught. These two young men have been dreaming about this trip since they saw that TV show in 1987, talk about a dream come true!
On April 18 my friend, world class angler Billy Pate passed away after suffering from Alzheimer's for several years. Billy was a great big fish fly angler, he did it right and set many world records on Billfish and Tarpon. Billy will be missed by many, he did a lot for fly fishing, he is in my prayers.
I just heard that Lance and Randall Kaufmann closed their Portland and Seattle stores after being in business for more than 40 years. Kaufmann's was one of the best fly shops in the US, I fished many of their clients for years and always enjoyed receiving their catalogue. The world keeps changing, not for the better in my opinion.
So far the Tarpon fly fishing here in the Keys has been better than I have seen during April in many years, the water is warm, the weather is great, and the Tarpon ate both plentiful and hungry. I do still have a very few good Tarpon tides left during April and May, with some really good tides still available during June. Call me if you need a Tarpon fix? I love my Job, wish you were here.

Florida Keys Tarpon Report
April 16 & 17, 2011
Greetings from Tarpon World:
April 16, 1011: today my friends Kary Via from NC, and Danny Frohman from Virginia arrived for a couple of nights of fly fishing for Tarpon. Both Kary and Danny are very good fly anglers however neither one had ever caught a Tarpon on fly. The guys took a nap after that long drive and we headed to "Tarpon World" about midnight, it took a while, and then at 12:15 Cary jumped and fought a no pound male which eventually spit the hook. Next it was Danny's turn to fight his first Tarpon on fly, this went on for 4 hours and at the end of the night the guys had jumped and fought 8 Tarpon, and each had released a fish of close to 100 pounds. We had a big time with big smiles on everyone's face. Home at 5 AM for a nap!
April 17, 2011: Danny, Kary, and I launched my skiff at 1:00 PM and headed to some flats near the 7 mile bridge, in calm seas with 82 degree water temperature and bright sunshine. I went to "Happy Valley" , turned off the motor, got out the 12 weight, gave some instruction, and then climbed up on the poling platform. Kary was my first angler on the front deck, "11 O'clock, 200 feet, on the white sand, do you see them?" I poled the skiff into the correct location and instructed to Kary to take the 60 foot cast, to the lead fish of the school of happy fish. Kary made a good cast, "strip, strip, strip, HE ATE IT, set the hook"! The fish was coming straight at us, and spit the hook on the hook set. We saw several more small pods and then moved east to one of my favorite flats where Danny got several shots at some daisy chaining Poons, "No Love". We moved to another spot, got another couple of shots, and then the clouds covered the sun and we came in for a nap.
At 1 AM we hit Tarpon World where we found a full moon and hungry Tarpon, Danny was the hot fly rod tonight , he caught the first three fish that ate the fly tonight, then Kary jumped a couple, Fishing was good tonight. When we headed into the dock at 5:30 AM my two anglers had Jumped and fought a total of 9 Tarpon and landed 4 on fly. After 2 charters, 8 hours total of night time Tarpon fly fishing, Kary and Danny had jumped 17 and released 6 Tarpon several big females, on fly after never catching one before, welcome to "The Tarpon School"!
I love my job, still have open dates, call me, wish you were here.

Florida Keys Tarpon Report
April 14 & 15, 2011
Greetings from Tarpon World:
The last two days Randy Genis and his son "Tarpon" Sam Genis from Reno NV joined me for some Extreme Night Tarpon fly fishing. Randy and Sam spent the week before Christmas with me in Guatemala at Casa Vieja Lodge on the only trip to Guatemala that I have ever had without catching a Sailfish on fly. These two night charters made up for that trip in spades.
April, 14, 2011: I gave Randy and Sam instructions as how to deal with Tarpon on a fly rod, before we began fishing at 10 PM. The wind was calm with smooth water, Randy hooked the first Tarpon of the night, it jumped 6 times, and ran off 300 yards of backing. We chased this big fish for a mile until she jumped and spit the hook. Next Sam hooked a Female of over 100 pounds, this fish dragged the boat down current for 2 miles where it swam around a piling and cut the backing taking the whole fly line. Randy hooked a Tarpon of close to 100 pounds which was red hot, after 20 minutes Randy wound the leader into the rod tip for a picture and then I released that awesome Tarpon.
April, 15, 2011: Tonight the wind was 10 knots from the east, and the Tarpon were active on the first flat where we headed too. Randy hooked, fought, and released a 60 pound male on his first cast . Next Tarpon Sam caught and released a 75 pound male, his biggest fish ever , and he caught it on a fly. As the charter continued randy and Sam took turns hooking and fighting Tarpon, by 3:00 AM Sam had jumped 3 from 5 bites, he caught and released 2 Tarpon on fly , one 75 pounds, and the other about 110 pounds. Randy Caught two after Jumping four, his biggest fish was well over 100 pounds, a big smile was on the face of this father and son fly angler combo. Total during the 8 hours of charters during the two nights, Jumped 10 caught and released 5 Tarpon on fly! I love my Job, wish you were here, I still have dates available, call Me!

Tarpon on Fly Report
April 12 & 13, 2011
Greetings from Tarpon World:
Sunny with light wind, 83 degree water temperature, 70 degree night air temperature, seems like it is Tarpon season? My friends Helen and Jim Truchan finished their third evening of fly fishing for Tarpon at 1:00 AM this morning, the results below tell their story.
April 12, 2011; We headed out to the Tarpon feeding grounds at 8:00 PM, very light wind from the North West with calm seas. Lots of Tarpon feeding on the surface, (eating shrimp), so it didn't take long for Helen to hook her first Tarpon of the night. That 80 pound male jumped 12 times, and fought like a giant, after a short 20 minute battle Helen wound the leader into the rod tip for a release and we let that guy swim away.
Next Jim hooked and fought a monster 125 pound female, she was so fat that when she jumped her body only cleared the water by 3 foot. 45 minutes later that big female Tarpon was released and we went back to catch another one. The last fish of the night was a 110 pound female which fought a valiant fight before finally Helen wound her up next to the boat fro our third release of the night.
April 13, 2011; We fished this evening from 9:00 PM through 1:00 AM, in a north west wind blowing between 10 and 15 knots. The north wind turned off the aggressive feeding on the surface, however Helen hooked a red hot fish on her first cast. That monster fish took off for Cuba, she pulled off 300 yards of backing before I could get the boat ready for the chase, it went east, then west, and finally headed south where it found a friendly bridge piling. The tarpon swam around that barnacle encased piling and cut the backing just past the fly line, that is why I buy RIO fly lines by the dozen! After that we has a 2 hour dry spell where we could not find any fish, that all changed at midnight, when I looked on a flat which I had not fished this season, they were there, and feeding! Jim hooked, jumped, and fought a big fish which eventually jumped and landed on the class tippet , breaking the leader. Shortly after that Helen hooked a 90 pound male, she fought that fish for 35 minutes and it towed the boat about 2 miles out into the ocean, we finally got him up for a picture and release ending another awesome Tarpon fly fishing Adventure.
Tarpon fly fishing is happening right now, I begin several charters with Randy Genis and his son Sam today, looks like great fly fishing for Tarpon. Surprisingly, I still have some prime time night Tarpon fly fishing dates available, April 18, 19, 20, April 23, 24, 25, May 2, May 29, and June 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, June 22, 23, 24, 25. If you have the desire to CATCH some Tarpon on fly, you need to contact me now to lock in some of the best Tarpon fly fishing in the world! I love my Job, wish you were here.

Greetings from Tarpon World:
I arrived here too Marathon, in the Florida Keys on April 9, moved into my rental home that day, and then got my fishing stuff ready for Tarpon Season. The following morning, on April 10, I launched 'Fly Reel", my Jones Brothers Cape Fisherman 2000, put her in the slip and then I fished a practice night that evening. We left the dock at 7:00 PM caught 4 tarpon from 4 bites and was back at the dock by 10:00 PM.
April 11, 2012: Jim and Helen Truchen, from Michigan and the west coast of Florida, arrived here in the Keys ready for their 3 consecutive nights of fly fishing for Tarpon. We left the dock at 6:50 PM, and then Helen jumped her first fish after fishing for less than 10 minutes. Jim and Helen took turns after that, both were hooking, Jumping, and fighting big Tarpon on fly. We were giggling like little kids as Tarpon by the hundreds ate shrimp crabs and of course "POON BUGS off of the surface. At 11:00 PM when we headed back to the dock Helen had jumped 4 Tarpon and Landed one (about 90 Pounds) while Jim Jumped 3 Tarpon and landed one which was estimated at 100 pounds.
The weather is perfect and the Tarpon are biting, Helen, Jim, and I will head back out this evening, More reports to follow, I love this Job, wish you were here, I still have a few openings!
