Fly Fishing Report, Casa Vieja Lodge
December 11, 2013
Greetings from Delta flight # 906, somewhere between Guatemala and Atlanta:
Yesterday, December 11, 2013 Sarah Gardner, Brian Horsley, Danny Cline and I , had a great breakfast at the world class Casa Vieja Lodge, before the short drive over to the Sailfish Marina to join Captain Mike Sheeder aboard Intensity for our third day of fly fishing for Billfish. We ran 38 miles out before Flaco and Ricardo deployed our teasers, at 9:30 we raised a sailfish, it teased halfway in and then faded off before Danny ever got to cast at that lethargic sailfish. Fishing was slow all day, we heard the other Casa Vieja Lodge fleet of boats reporting catching fish, however we only got several bites all day.
Sarah got a bite, it seemed solid, but the fly fell out of that fishes mouth, Brian got a great bite on a big fish but the hook pulled.
At the end of this beautiful day, my slowest ever in Guatemala we never got the skunk out of the boat, we went zero from three bites. Sometime we just have to pay our dues for the great days which we have catching these awesome billfish on fly, this trip we only caught three sailfish and a 200 pound blue marlin on fly during three days of fly fishing for Billfish. WOW, what a great place when it is a slow trip when you catch a 200 pound Blue Marlin on 20 pound, IGFA class tippet on a Fly!!
We all had a great time, Casa Vieja Lodge was as usual the finest fly fishing lodge in the world.
My friend and great fly angler Nat Harris arrived yesterday and he will be fly fishing aboard Intensity during the next four days, good luck Nat. While we were there a very nice 84 year young angler caught a Black Marlin on conventional tackle, and the next day he caught four sailfish on fly, all aboard the Finest Kind with captain David Salazar, out of Casa Vieja Lodge. I love my job, and can't wait to get back home to Guatemala. Stay tuned for more fishing reports to follow. Below are a few shots taken by Brian and Sarah during our trip.

Casa Vieja Lodge, Sailfish School Report
December, 10, 2013
Greetings from
Today aboard Intensity, Brian Horsley, Danny Cline, Sara Gardner, and I spent this beautiful calm day raising 21 sailfish. Captain Mike Sheeder along with mates Flaco and Ricardo did a great job by getting us a total of 14 bites, however we got all of the bad luck out of the way as we released only three wonderful sailfish on fly. We all agree that today was a good day for the sailfish which were acting weird and biting lethargically. All of the Casa Vieja Lodge boats reased more than 20 sailfish today and I am sure it is getting better each day. Stay tuned for more action later today, I love my job, wish you were here.

Jake

Casa Vieja Lodge, Marlin on Fly Report
December, 9, 2013
Greetings from Guatemala:
Yesterday I arrived at the world class resort, Casa Vieja Lodge, with my friends Danny Cline, along with Brian Horsley and Sarah Gardner. We are here to fly fish for billfish for a few days while relaxing and vacationing in Guatemala.
Today, December ninth, we left the dock at 7 AM, aboard captain Mike Sheeder's vessel "Intensity" with mates Flaco and Ricardo in the cockpit ready to do battle with billfish on fly. At 9 AM we raised a sailfish, it teased in and Danny made a good cast, that sailfish faded off and we never saw it again. The weather was very good, calm seas low wind, good sunshine, and hot temperatures, we never saw another fish until about 3 PM, (slow day), then we raised a red hot Blue Marlin on the port flat line. Flaco teased it in hot, Brian Horsley made a perfect cast with the pink Cam Sigler fly, and that Marlin smashed that fly. A few minutes after Brian wound the leader into the tiptop and we released a 200 pound Blue Marlin on fly from 20 pound tippet. Wow, another Marlin on fly, I love my job, wish you were here. More reports tomorrow.

Marlin on Fly Report from Costa Rica
December 3, 2013
Greetings from Los Suenos Costa Rica:
Today was the third day of a vacation trip with my friend George Beckwith where we are fly fishing for Marlin, aboard his Charter Boat " Dragin Fly" with captain James Smith, and mates Berto and Marcos. We left this beautiful marina at 7:00 AM and headed 35 miles straight off shore, where deployed our teasers. Partly cloudy skies with rain further off shore, 10 knot wind and 3 foot seas with 82 degree water temperature.
At 9 Am I made my first cast, and 2 minutes later I released a big sailfish, which I caught on a pink Cam Sigler popper fly, a TFO BW heavy Duty fly rod, a Mako #9600 fly reel and a Rio 550 grain fly line. The other guests aboard made some casts at some sailfish and then we raised another Blue Marlin (100 pounds) which teased in, but would not ever touch my fly. Later in the day I made my third cast of the day to a 100 pound Striped Marlin. When this awesome fish ate my fly it went crazy, didn't take long though, before I caught and released this cool Striped Marlin. This done, my record for three days of fly fishing for Billfish was 3 sailfish and two Striped Marlin caught and released along with 3 more shots at Sailfish and two Blue Marlin.
What a fun trip, I enjoyed fishing with this great crew, next week I will be fly fishing for Billfish in Guatemala at the Casa Vieja Lodge. Stay tuned for more fly fishing reports, I love my job, wish you were here.
Regards:
Jake

Guatemala Fly Fishing Report
January 10, 2013
Greetings from Casa Vieja Lodge:
Today was a typical day in Guatemala, we had sunshine, blue skies, calm wind, along with lots of hungry sailfish. Dusty and Billy Coulliette were fishing with me aboard "Intensity' with Captain Mike Sheeder along with his mates Flaco, and Ricardo, the fly fishing was good. At two o'clock in the afternoon we had raised 9 sailfish, had 8 bites and caught all 8 sailfish on fly, after which we missed a couple of weak bites. For the day we raised 19 sailfish, got 14 to bite the fly, while we released 9 sailfish on fly. During the last 4 days of fly fishing for Sailfish, team "Intensity" released 30 fly caught sailfish, what a great vacation for Dusty and Billy.
Meanwhile aboard "Makaira" with Captain Jason Brice along with his mates Jeffery and Wilson, Paul McGarvie used his newly acquired fly fishing skills to catch and release 13 sailfish on fly from only 15 bites of the 16 sailfish which were raised. Paul and I fishing aboard Makaira managed to release 30 sailfish on fly during the last four days of fly fishing here out of Casa Vieja Lodge. Paul has already booked to fish in my tournament during January of 2013.
My friend Austin Hepburn along with the father and son team of Robert and Maxwell Moran, aboard "Rum Line" with Captain Chris Sheeder and his mates Nico and Saunder, raised 14 sailfish and two blue marlin, they got six bites, and released two sailfish on fly. During the last four days of fly fishing for sailfish the "Rum Line" team caught and released 28 sailfish on fly, they are out there aboard "Rum Line" today for one more day of this awesome fishery.
Oh and by the way, my friend and world class fly angler Nick Smith just left after five days of fly fishing for sailfish aboard his vessel "Old Reliable" with Captain Chip Shafer. After 5 full days of fly fishing for these awesome Pacific Sailfish, Nick caught and released 50 sailfish on fly for an average of 10 sailfish per day released on fly, great trip for Nick and Chip.
Today I have more clients heading to Casa Vieja Lodge to attend a "Sailfish School" with me during the next 4 days. Mean while a booking mistake just made available several of the best fly fishing boats in the world on January 22, 23, 24, & 25, please if you can make it down here at that time e-mail me today so I can lock up some of these prime time dates for you. In the mean time, stand by for more fly fishing reports from Casa Vieja Lodge in Guatemala (my second home), I really love my job, wish you were here.

Guatemala Fly Fishing Report
January 9, 2013
Greetings from Casa Vieja Lodge:
Today the same anglers fished together aboard Rum Line, Intensity, and Makaira, we had real good, consistent, fly fishing for sailfish. I fished aboard Makaira with Paul McGarvie, along with Captain Jason Brice and mates Jeffery and Wilson. We raised 13 sailfish, 10 bit the fly and we released 8 sailfish. We are using TFO Bluewater HD fly rods, Mako Fly Reels, Rio Leviathan fly lines, Cam Sigler flies, and Gamakatsu hooks here at my Sailfish School, they really do the job. Below are a couple of pictures taken with my new iphone 5, I am beginning to like it.
Billy and Dusty Coulliette fished again aboard Intensity with Captain Mike Sheeder, and mates, Flaco and Ricardo. Today they raised 24 sailfish, got 15 to bite the fly, and they released six of those sailfish on fly. Tomorrow I will fish with them and I am sure that our percentage will improve.
Austin Hepburn along with Robert and Maxwell Moran, fly fished again today aboard Rum Line with Captain Chris Sheeder and his mates Nico and Saunder. They were the high boat today with 27 sailfish raised, 16 of them ate the fly while this team caught and released 9 sails on the fly.
Of course the employees, food and beverage service, lodging, boats, and crews, along with the expert management by Antonio and Edgar are all world class. We are selling out quickly for this season, call or E-mail me if you want to get in on this awesome action this season or next year. I really love my job, wish you were here, I will see many of you during the next 6 or 7 weeks at "The Fly Fishing Shows" or the Miami Boat show. Stay tuned for more exciting fishing reports in the near future.

Jake

Guatemala Fly Fishing Report
January 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 2013
Greetings from Casa Vieja Lodge:
The old saying, "You Should Have Been Here Yesterday", came true for me last night, when frequent Casa Vieja Lodge client, fly angler, Kirk Weisman, related his fly fishing report to me for his last two days aboard Intensity with Captain Mike Sheeder. aboard January 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6, Kirk caught: 24, 34, 18, 13, & 8, sailfish on fly during those 5 consecutive days. That is a total of 97 Sailfish caught on fly by one angler in five days fly fishing, "Only in Guatemala! Meanwhile on January 3, 4, 5, Captain Chris Sheeder's clients aboard "Rum Line" caught and released 43, 23, & 28 during 3 consecutive days of Sailfishing.
Captain Jason Brice fishing aboard "Makaira" fished on January 5, with his client Siska, they raised 20, got 13 bites, and caught 9 sailfish for the day. Guatemala has such great fishing that catching only 9 sailfish seems slow, we are really fortunate to have such an awesome fishery.
Today January 7, 2013, Paul McGarvie from NJ is fly fishing aboard "Makaira" with Captain Jason, while Billy and Dusty Coulliette from Alaska are fly fishing aboard Intensity with Captain Mike, and Austin Hepburn from Pennsylvania, with his father and son team of clients are fly fishing aboard "Rum Line", I am at the Lodge nursing a head cold type of illness which I contracted aboard the airplane. Stay tuned for more fly fishing reports to follow shortly, I love my Job, Wish you were here. There are still very few openings here between now and April 1st, contact me now if you want to try your luck.

Jake
