Alaska September 2009
As many of you know I have spent more than 30 years in Alaska during August and September. It has been several years since I made a personal commitment which does not permit me to return to my beloved Alaska for an undetermined amount of time. In my opinion September and early October is the prime time months to be fly fishing for big fish in the Great Land.
My good friend Tony Weaver (world class fly angler) who taught me much about fishing in Alaska, sent me the picture below. This photo is of a new world record Northern Pike caught on fly, this was one of several which would have broken the current world record on fly.
After fishing all of those years in Alaska I found that there are three rivers in the world which hold 40 inch plus wild Rainbow Trout, all three are in Alaska. The easiest River to get to is the upper and middle Kenai river near Coopers Landing Alaska. Curt Trout was my mentor on this great river, teaching me about the big Rainbow Trout along with the monster Dolly Varden available during September and early October on the Kenai.
Curt not only shared this great fishery but he also taught several young guides while he was alive. Billy Coulliette and his wife Dusty Byrd, now the owners of Alaska Troutfitters www.aktroutfitters.com have carried on Curt's tradition of producing the most consistent fly fishing for giant, wild, Rainbow Trout in the world. My good friend Billy Coulliette has taken this fishery to the next level, he not only knows exactly what these giant trout eat, but he can tell you within a week or two exactly when the monster fish will be caught. Below is a big Rainbow Trout caught by one of Billy's clients on fly last week. Stand by as I am sure that I will receive pictures of even larger Rainbow Trout during the next week or two.
I can't wait until I get back up to my Alaska, however until then let me know if you want to experience this awesome fishery and I will hook you up with Alaska's finest fishing guides.
Regards:
Jake
