Casa Vieja Lodge Fly Fishing Report
December 9, 10, 11, 12, 2012
Good Morning:
I am in the Miami Airport heading back down to Casa Vieja Lodge in Guatemala, I will be fly fishing for Billfish until December 20 and I'll be home on December 21 and remain there through the holidays.
Below is a summary sent to me by my good friend, client, world class billfish fly angler, and the District 5 Commissioner for the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, Nat Harris. Nat fished aboard "Intensity" with Captain Mike Sheeder along with mates Flaco, and Ricardo, he caught and released 32 sailfish on fly during his trip. Nat also lost one of his Mako #9700 fly reels on a TFO Blue Water HD Fly Rods over board while catching a double header of 100 pound plus sailfish on fly during his last day. Great Job my friend!
Jake---
As promised, the following is the fishing summary, stated as bites/releases with commentary:
Day 1
- · 7/5 – Typical first day cockpit errors, but 5 fish on a fly rod any day is an awesome day.
Day 2
- · 8/7 – Improved dramatically. Found a few more fish. An awesome day on the smooth waters in Guatemala.
Day 3
- · 18/15 – This was a day to remember. In 10 minutes of putting out our teasers, approximately 30 miles offshore, we were in fish and by 11:00 am we had 11 releases. It slowed some, we took a break and had a great lunch aboard the Intensity, and then we picked up 4 additional fish.
Day 4
- · 14/7 – At noon on the final day we had no releases, but had 4 bites, hooked 1, threw the hook. The fish were a bit tentative and yours truly did not set the hooks properly. It slowed dramatically after 9:30 and picked up at 1:30. Even with all of the angler errors, we still ended with 7 fish. You will find this of interest: toward the end of the day we had a nice double, I had my release on the first fish, accepted the new rod from Flaco, and handed him my rod with the fish still on. Thank goodness I wasn't running with an Olympics relay team; when I handed the rod to him it was not a good hand off, the fish surged and the end of the story is my wonderful rod and Mako reel were overboard. Without one second of hesitation, Flaco was in the water making every effort to retrieve, but no success. 30 seconds later we saw the fish jumping about 50 yards away and we hustled there, but it was too late, the fish sounded and that was that.
Note to Jake: I need a new rod and reel and need the reel set up if you will, please.
Captain Mike Sheeder, Flaco and Ricardo were awesome. My greatest weakness is the hook up and I still don't have your methodology down pat, but I will get there. The rods I purchased from you are terrific and the Mako reels are nothing short of awesome. The reel set up with the gel spun backing to the 80 feet of 50 lbs. Suffix mono to the 15 feet of Rio 550 (80 lb core) to the wonderful butt sections and then to the leader, and Cam Sigler fly. I have never seen a better set up.
Thank you for making these arrangements for me. Do send me a separate email on timing for a new rod and reel.
A terrific initiation to a season in a wonderful country with all of the fabulous people at Casa Vieja; Antonio, Edgar, Julian, Michael, David, et. al.
Sorry for the volume, my friend.
I am very jealous, I have to go back to work and you return to your work, but your work is in Guatemala on the water. No wonder you love your job.
Remember that I have available dates still available on top boats during early January, these may be the best fly fishing dates of the season. I love this job, stay tuned for more reports to follow, wish you were here.
Regards:
Jake

Greetings from Sailfish World:
Today Danny Cline, Dave Miller and I boarded Makaira at 7:00 AM, left marina Pez Vela with captain Jason Brice at the helm. We ran 38 miles put in the teasers and 15 minutes later Danny had released his first Sailfish on fly of the day. Dave was next 15 minutes later, then Danny and I caught a double on fly, it was good in the morning and then slowed way down in the afternoon. When we quit fishing and headed to the dock we had 6 bites from Sailfish on fly, and caught a total of five, along with half a dozen yellow fin tuna from 12 to 20 pounds. Score for the first two days of this first Sailfish School of the season, 11 billfish bit the fly, we released 9 sailfish and a Blue Marlin, 90 something percent catch ratio, I love this Job.
The other Casa Vieja Boats fishing yesterday landed between 13 and 19 sailfish per boat on conventional tackle, the fishing is getting better. Wish You were here, the fishing is getting real good.

Sailfish School Report Casa Vieja Lodge Guatemala
December 6, 2012
Greetings from Marlin World:
Today December 6 2012 was the first day of my Sailfish School season here at the world class Casa Vieja Lodge in Guatemala. My clients Dave Wilson, from Texas & Colorado along with Danny Cline on a practice trip for the tournament next month, joined me aboard "Makaira" with Captain Jason Brice and mates Jeffery & Wilson. Dave had never been Sail fishing so I went through all of the system and equipment with him on the way out.
Forty miles from the Marina we slowed down and put the teasers out, 10 minutes later I was showing Dave the system when we raised a 250 pound Blue Marlin. Jeffery teased it in while I changed the drag setting from 6 pounds to one pound, and in slow motion, Jason pulled the vessel out of gear, said "CAST". After a perfect presentation, the marlin ate my pink and white Cam Sigler popper fly, and the Mako #9700 fly reel began to spin as that big fish went crazy. 18 minutes later I wound the leader inside of the rod tip for the technical release and then 40 minutes later after several missed tag attempts we let her go.
During the next 5 hours we raised 7 sailfish, 4 teased in and ate the fly, Dave went 3 for 3, while Danny caught the only fish that he cast to. Fishing is just heating up, what a great way to start my season, a 250# Blue Marlin on fly. Our score was 5 bites with 1 marlin and 4 sailfish released, Great Job by Danny and Dave also Jason, Jeffery and Wallace did an awesome job. I love my Job, wish you were here, Gone Fishing:

Guatemala Sailfish School Fly Fishing Report
January 6 & 7 2012
Greetings from world Famous Casa Vieja Lodge:
After leaving coastal North Carolina's lovely 18 degrees at 6 AM, arriving at Casa Vieja Lodge at 2:00 PM to 82 degree air temperature with sun shine felt real good. I took a dip in the pool, laid out in the sun for an hour or two and then met with the anglers returning from a good day of sailfishing.
Chris and John Palmari, two brothers from NYC and Arizona had fished for the 3
days with Chris Sheeder aboard Rum Line, they caught 10 on fly from 35 raised on their first day, they went 3 from 11 bites on day two, they took a day off and then on the 5th they caught 8 on fly from 14 bites.
Spindrift caught 22 and 20 on bait for the last two days, while Intensity had several double digit days before we started fishing with them. Yesterday my first day fishing with Jim and Brian Buckler from Colorado and Chicago was rough in the morning, we raised a fish which would not tease in at 8:00 AM. At 1: 30 we raised a double which came in hot, Brian caught the big fish which ate his fly.
Today the water was calm and fishing was slow, we raised one fish, got a bite, and did not hook the only fish of the day. I have not talked to any of the other boats yet so I do not know how the other boats did. Tomorrow we will go where the fish are and catch a lot aboard Intensity with Captain Mike. Yesterday Captain Jason Brice caught 8 sailfish. I am really tired, more reports to follow, wish you were here.

Jake

Greetings and Happy New Year from sunny Guatemala,
2011 ended and 2012 began with some fantastic fishing action from both sailfish and blue marlin. The year ended with boats raising up to 7 blues a day, and the year began with boats raising up to 40 sails a day!
The McGee / Hughes group tried their luck fishing aboard the Rum Line the last few days of December and raised 25 sails, 6 blue marlin and keep the grill supplied with fresh dorado burgers everyday. The two couples released 13 sails and 2 of the blues. The first days blue was about 250lbs, and day two's blue was over 400lbs...very nice!
The Palmieri brothers fly-fished the first few days of January and saw some awesome action as well. The duo raised 84 sails, more than half of which came blazing in to accept a fly, and we released 22. The blue marlin decided to tease us, with 4 of them showing up, but wouldn't be caught. Chris Palmieri decided to jump in and swim this his last fish to put a cap on a great trip. Check Chris and John out, holding up a nice one!
Tight Lines,
Chris Sheeder
